SAINT EDMUND CAMPION PILGRIMAGE WALK – SAFETY STATEMENT
1. St.Edmund Campion Pilgrimage Walk, going from Oxford to London, links several places associated with the life of St Edmund Campion. Each of the 16 stages of the Walk takes place on a Saturday or Sunday, between June – November 2008. The event is open to all in the community. The local area members of the Catenian Association are providing an infrastructure . 2. Every walker bears a responsibility for his /her own safety (with the exception of children or people with special needs who must be in the care of a responsible person). You are responsible for your own state of health and ability. ,If you have a medical condition or have any concerns about the state of your health or ability to walk the distance for the stage, please contact your doctor in advance. 3. Most stages of the Walk are not suitable for wheelchair users, pushchairs or those with limited mobility but they may wish to join those walking, at the local church for Mass at the end of the stage. The final stages are mainly on pavements in London and may be suitable, dependent on the individual’s capability. 4. Normal hazards are expected on the various stages of the Walk, eg. traffic, uneven surfaces, stiles, muddy or slippery paths, uneven surfaces. Actual weather conditions on the day, eg. very hot or rainy, may change conditions. You should wear clothing and footwear suitable to the activity and the weather conditions. All taking part must exercise great care at all stages of the Walk. 5. Where route maps or directions for any stage are available on the Walk website www.stedmundcampionwalk.co.uk , please take a copy with you. Some parts may be signed on the day. 6. The local stage co-ordinator may give information at the start of the stage, eg. any road crossings with marshalls, toilet locations, mobile phone contacts for emergencies or difficulties – please listen carefully and if anything is unclear, do ask for clarification. 7. Whilst care has been taken wherever possible to avoid walking on the road, this cannot be avoided throughout. No length of road to be walked will be patrolled or supervised. 8. The distances for each stage do vary. Please check beforehand that the distance is suitable for you. 9. Whilst some stages may have suitable places to stop for refreshment on the way, others do not. You should ensure that you have sufficient water and food for the Walk. 10. If you have a mobile phone, please take it with you in case of emergency. Please ensure you have the mobile number for the co-ordinator or one of his team. 11. Access to the event including car parking is at your own risk. 12. The Walk will pass through areas covered by Thames Valley and the Metropolitan Police Forces who have been informed of the Walk. 3.4.08 |
