Stage 10 Sat 4 October 2008 (8.5 miles ) Walk from St Edmund Campion Maidenhead to St Edward, Windsor (Portsmouth Diocese) Mass - 6.00 pm St Edmund Campion church is at 40a Altwood Road, Maidenhead, SL6 4PY. There is a car park and toilet facilities will be available. We will leave the church promptly at 1.00 pm. The first part of the walk is through the streets of Maidenhead to Bray where we cross the river by the pedestrian path at the side of the M4. We then walk along the Thames Path re-crossing the river at the A332 bridge at Windsor and complete the short walk to St Edward’s church in Alma Road. When we get to the centre of Bray we will take a short break, long enough for a quick drink or to use the toilets (you will probably need to use the facilities in a pub). We will leave there at 2.30 pm. From Maidenhead to the M4 bridge is about 3 miles so those who want a shorter walk of about 5½ miles should meet us at Monkey Island Lane, Bray by the motorway bridge just after 2.30 pm. Once we are on the Thames Path there are no toilets or other facilities but we could stop for 15 minutes if anyone wants to eat sandwiches. If anyone would like a meal before Mass (which starts at 6.00 pm) there are a number of pubs in Vansittart Road, Windsor. In order that arrangements can be made to transport people back to Maidenhead after Mass some participants will be asked to park in Windsor. They will be ferried back to Maidenhead for the start of the walk. The most convenient place to park in Windsor is in the College Car Par in Claremont Road. Walk directions: On leaving the church, turn left along Altwood Road as far as Wootton Road where turn right, Go under the railway bridge and cross the road at the traffic lights. Take the footpath alongside the railway and, halfway along, turn right into Rixman Close following the road as it turns right and then turn left into Larchfield Road. At the end of the road, cross over Shottenhanger’s Road and continue in the same direction along a footpath and across a golf course. The road emerges into Clifton Close. Turn right into Braywick Road and follow the slip road alongside the dual-carriageway and, where it meets the dual-carriageway by the lowered pavement, cross the dual-carriageway. (TAKE CARE. If you are with the main group, marshalls will co-ordinate the crossing of the road. Cross over the first carriageway and then wait in the middle before crossing the second carriageway). Turn to your left along Hibbert Road and then, after a few hundred yards, take a footpath on the right which emerges into Bray Road where turn right. We will leave from here at 2.30pm (see above). Walk down Bray road and continue into Mill Lane and then Monkey Island Lane and take the footpath on the left just before the bridge. Cross the bridge and go down the steps and under the bridge to the Thames Path. Follow this path until you reach the next road bridge over the river, the A332. Do not walk under the bridge but go up the slope or steps and take the footpath alongside the road crossing the river. On the far side of the river go down the slope and through the tunnel under the road and turn right. At the far end of the recreation ground turn left into Maidenhead Road, then first right into Vansittart Road where you may wish to stop at a pub for a drink and a meal, To get to the church, take the third left, Clarence Road and turn right into Alma Road. The car park is in Claremont Road, which is the road beside the church. Maps of the beginning and end of the walk (the middle section is along the Thames Path) will be distributed at the start of the walk.
