Walk from St John the Evangelist, Wallingford to Chapel of the Blessed Trinity, Stonor (Birmingham Diocese)  Mass -  6.00pm

Start time 10.30 am from Catholic Church in Wallingford.

[Please aim to be there for 10.15 to aid registration and receive maps and directions.

We will leave in small groups with leaders wearing tabards for safety.]

There is parking in the Town but there is a good car park by the River immediately to the North of Wallingford bridge. Coming into Wallingford from the east [via A4130 ] through Crowmarsh Gifford and turn right just before the Bridge]

Parking in Wallingford is pay and display but much is free on Sundays. At Stonor use the top car park and put a notice on your windscreen that you are on the Edmund Campion Walk.

Walk into the Town and turn left into St, Mary’s Place leading into St. Mary’s Street and the Church is on your left just before Barclays Bank.

If you are late ring one of the mobiles given above for Tony or John.

Resume of the Walk

It is long at over 11miles. You will need proper walking gear including walking boots, rain wear, water and food to keep you going on the way. [A change of shirt, shoes and socks before mass might be a good idea too.]

The first stage is nearly all on the Ridgeway and rises some 600 feet over 5 1/2 miles from The Thames at Wallingford to a high point in the Chiltern Hills at Nuffield [ Next to Huntercoombe Golf Course]

It is a relentless climb through a shady tree lined path for the most part.

There are just 2 roads to cross and apart from the early part through Wallingford there is no road walking.

We then stop at the Crown at Nuffield for lunch.

Some may leave here and others may join as they wish.

The second stage, again of about 5 ½ miles, continues for a short while on the Ridgeway but soon follows the Chiltern Way into Stonor.

This is undulating countryside again with hardly any metalled roads to walk on. Parts are very steep and will make an experienced walker puff!

It is a beautiful walk but not for those who are of more mature years, have any disability which impedes walking or are not fairly fit and used to long walks.  On the way we saw deer and red kites through the beech woods.

The only toilet facilities on the way will be at The Crown.

There will be a short procession from the Gates of Stonor Park to the Chapel at 5.30pm with the Mass starting at 6pm .

Those not up to the walk are very welcome to join us at this stage.
