Stage 9 Sat 27 September 2008 (6.5 miles)
Walk from St Peter, Marlow to St Edmund Campion Maidenhead Mass 6-15pmStart time: Depart St Peters Church car park at 2.00 pm. We intend to walk as a group with a walk leader and a back marker both familiar with the intended route. The walk is very pleasant and varied mostly along marked paths, with a stretch along the River Thames, a short climb up Prospect Hill with a nice view of The Thames Valley, and some open farmland and woodland including Maidenhead Thicket. Finish: The walk should take about 3 hours and finish at St Edmund Campion Church Maidenhead with time to change and retrieve cars parked at Marlow before Mass at 6. 15 pm. Transport: We will co-ordinate transport. The plan is for everyone travelling by car to gather at the end of the walk in St Edmond Campion Church Car Park Maidenhead at 1.15 pm. We will leave some cars at Maidenhead and take sufficient vehicles to transport everyone to Marlow for the start. At the end of the walk car drivers will be taken to Marlow to retrieve their cars. Alternatively: There is a train from Maidenhead to Marlow and a bus service from High Wycombe to Marlow or Reading to Marlow via Henley. Anyone travelling independently should ensure they are at the start by 1.45 pm Those intending to Walk should sign-up For further please contact: Tom Burke Resume of Walk Although the walk is only 6.5 miles long there are some rough paths and you will need proper walking boots or trainers, rain wear, water, and a snack to keep you going.(A change of shirt, shoes and socks before Mass might also be a good idea). Route Leave St Peters car park and cross Marlow Road to enter Court Gardens. Follow the Thames Path on the north bank of the river for about a mile past Temple Lock to the Temple Footbridge. Cross the river and continue up stream for a short while. Take the first marked footpath on the left and continue to meet a gravel lane. Turn right and continue along the lane until it bears right. Leave the lane and follow the path ahead to reach the road at Hurley with the Olde Bell PH on the left At the Bell turn left and follows the road to a T junction with the A4130. Cross this main road and continue on a path straight ahead up Prospect Hill. (This is the only real hill on the walk.) At the top of the hill enter a wood and immediately turn left along a level path. Continue to a crossing path and turn right along the path to the edge of the wood emerging onto a track across open farmland. Continue straight ahead to Hall Place, past caged birds, animal pens, Llamas and stables to reach Hall Place College. At the College, turn left and walk down the drive for about 100 yards to a signed footpath on the right. Take this footpath across a grass field and continue on a lane to emerge at a PH at Burchett’s Green. Cross the A404 into the lane opposite with the PH on the right. Take the path on the left to pass farm buildings on the right and follow the track ahead across open farmland to enter woodland above Robin Hood’s Arbour on the edge of Maidenhead Thicket. On entering the wood take the first turning on the right and continue south through the wood until the path divides. Take the left fork and continue to intercept a wide crossing track. Turn right onto the track to emerge at the A4 road opposite The Shire Horse PH. Cross the A4 with care and continue down the lane opposite with the PH on the right. About 50 yards along the lane turn left onto a path into the woods once again. Keep straight ahead for about half a mile ignoring various paths which cross the area eventually arriving at a small parking place at Cannon Lane. Cross Cannon Lane turn left to pass under the A404 (M) motorway bridge, then turn right into Altwood Road and continue about 300 yards to St Edmund Campian Church on the left hand side of the road |
